In a strategic push to be recognized as a global creative capital St Petersburg is investing heavily in its cultural institutions.  The strategy focuses on investment in the creative industries and capacity building.

Anton Gubankov, the head of the St. Petersburg Committee of Culture, says in the Voice of Russia, “I am positive that St. Petersburg is a city which must become Russia’s leader in forming so-called creative industries and creative territories.”

“These territories,” he continues, “should be like cradles of creative, artistic and intellectual initiatives. The city development strategy should provide for the organization of creative public spaces and large-scale creative events.”
