19th September: Walk it, Talk it
Does Green Sell? And if so, is what’s being sold really green? Today’s events look beneath the paintwork at Greenwash and green marketing, examining what kind of claims are being made and what substance they have. In addition, we’ll be running practical workshops on how to walk the talk and green up your print production.
10-11am Masterclass: How Do You Create Value from Sustainability?
with Peter Madden, Chief Executive, Forum for the Future
Peter will talk about what big business and the public sector are currently facing with regards to sustainable development. He will explore how leaders are exploiting the opportunities sustainability presents and will facilitate a discussion on what Design’s role can and should be.
This is a great opportunity for leaders in the design industry to understand where sustainability fits in their clients’business strategy as well as in their own. It will also give an insight into future trends and how designers can use them to create products and services for a sustainable future.

11-12pm Masterclass: Chemists and designers working together: Reducing the impact of the products we buy
with Dr Mike Pitts, Manager of the Sustainable Technologies Priority for Chemistry Innovation Knowledge Transfer Network
It is estimated that over 90% of production materials do not end up in saleable products and 80% of products are discarded after a single use. This is causing us to rapidly consume the planet’s resources including metals, minerals, clean water and fossil fuels. Sustainable chemistry technologies are being used to reduce the impact of our lifestyles. With a greater understanding of materials and life-cycles, the next generation of chemists and designers will develop even more ingenious solutions.

A practical master class with experts from the field to help you through the complexity of terms and processes to create sustainable print.
with Three Trees Don’t Make a Forest - a not-for-profit social enterprise set up by directors of three established and successful agencies. They aim to provide tools for all designers and businesses who are involved in design and advertising to inspire them to re-think their working cultures and start to produce sustainable design that really works.

6.30-8.30pm Debate: Should we believe the hype? Green Marketing, spin and substance followed by drinks
In 2007, 70% of the US’s GDP was generated from consumption. UK household waste has been growing by 2% – 3% per cent a year. The average shopper in the developed world shopper adds 3 tonnes of CO2 to their carbon footprint by simply buying stuff. Products and services are clicking on to the big sell of green. In the climate of economic down turn how can we create behaviour change in consumers who are bombarded by advertising and bored of green wash?
